Mirror Dinghy 2671 - Has Been Sold

[Back to List of Items]

This Mirror Dinghy is unique, both because of its age and because it has had only one owner from new in 1964. It has had relatively little use and has only been sailed once in the last 25 years. It has never been modified or had to undergo repairs. It can be regarded as historic for anyone interested in the history of Mirror Dinghies, because it remains completely representative of the first such boats built in Australia (and probably also of the first UK boats).

Mirror 2671 was supplied in 1964 by "Blockey the Boatbuilder" in Melbourne as an assembled hull, together with the rest of the kit and materials for its completion. If my memory is correct the first Mirrors in Australia started with the number series from 2500, except for one which had an earlier number in the UK series. This Mirror was therefore one of the first group completed in Australia.

The fittings such as masts, tiller, centreboard and oars are in very good condition with the original coats of varnish. The original sails and spinnaker are intact and undamaged with the original sailmaker's bag. While the boat has been kept under cover, with the passage of 40 years the hull now needs to be completely re-painted with minor repairs at the top corners of the transom.

This Mirror could therefore be restored relatively simply to its original 1964 condition, complete with its original fittings and equipment. I would hope that this would be its future, to be retained as an historic boat to show an early part of the history of The Mirror Class Dinghy.

For historical interest, the following pictures come from a leaflet in the early 1960's. The Mirrors in these pictures are some of the first made in UK.
