Introduction

For an internet site to be useful, someone has to prepare web pages for it.

If you are trying to work on a minimum budget, it probably means you should do most of the work. It is not really that hard, but can be time consuming.

We therefore offer a few random suggestions from the way we try to do things. We won't be hurt if you disagree, or want to do things in another way.

Writing Web Pages.

Use simple pages where the content is nearly all in the text, with carefully selected graphics so that most pages are below 50 Kb in total (and half that if possible).

Provide a clear navigation system between pages, and back again because search engines can start people at any page.

If you want search engines to find all pages, don't use frames (a suggestion that is in conflict with previous discussion about Domain Name forwarding, which uses frames.).

While there are many programs that allow you to write web pages without knowing much about HTML, learn about HTML as soon as you can. This will eventually make things easier and better.

Very carefully select the words and text that you use for Page TITLE, META description, and META keywords - if you want search engines to find you.

To get clear pictures in the smallest possible computer file, don't start with a .JPG file and keep progressively reducing it - start with a .TIF file, keep reducing it in size as necessary, and turn it into a JPG file as the last step.

Don't put up "Under Construction" pages or apologize for lack of content - if a page is not ready to be seen on the internet, don't put it there.

Make sure that the spelling is correct.

Make sure that your contact details are easily found.

Provided you are comfortable with it, don't try to get each page absolutely perfect before you put it on the internet. Even if you do create the perfect page, there will be a compelling reason to change it the next day.
